China’s strategic culture and national aspirations are shaped by Middle Kingdom Syndrome & the Century of Humiliation. China’s global expansion grows directly out of Government policies promulgated at the famous 3rd Plenary Session in 1978 to engage in reform and opening. The stated vision is “to transform the PRC into a strong, fully modernised nation by 2049”, thus China’s emergence as a global power is an incontrovertible reality. While it is growing at an awesome pace, there are complex characteristics and imbroglios. China looks at the 21st Century as an era of strategic opportunity. The Chinese are convinced of being natural claimants for global power stature and there is a pronounced quest to attain a rightful place amongst the comity of nations.
