Dedicated to the memory of the soldiers of the 26th Native Infantry Battalion, 282 of whom lie reduced to bones—unsung, unwept and unhonoured in a well in the precincts of Gurdwara Shaheedaan at Ajnala; and also the 42 of them blasted at the mouth of cannons by the East India Company at Lahore and another about 150 who got martyred while fighting barehanded with the armed police and hostile elements let loose on them by the Company during the great surge for Independence in 1857.
